Description
Bottled by Auchentoshan in 2006 as a 40 year old decanter release from 1965 vintage stock, with 200 bottles distributed across the European market at natural strength. The decanter format groups long matured Lowland stock laid down during the Eadie Cairns ownership era at one of Scotland's most distinctive distilleries.
Produced from 100% unpeated malted barley with Loch Cochno water from the Kilpatrick Hills, the wash was fermented for around 62 hours across Douglas fir and stainless steel washbacks before triple distillation through wash, intermediate, and spirit pot stills. The intermediate stage and final cut at around 81% ABV give Auchentoshan its signature high copper contact, stripping sulphur compounds and heavy fusel oils to leave a clean, ester led new make filled into ex Bourbon American oak for on site dunnage maturation.
Four decades in cool, damp Lowland warehousing delivered patient extraction from the American oak. Lignin breakdown released vanillin while cis and trans oak lactones built vanilla and coconut, with hemicellulose hydrolysis adding furfural and toasted sugar character. Natural strength of 41.6% reflects steady evaporative loss across forty years, and tertiary ester development lends an integrated, refined finish over the lighter triple distilled spirit base.
