Description
Port cask finishing has been part of the Arran release calendar since the late 1990s, making it one of the longest running of the distillery's wine cask experiments. This earlier Port Cask bottling sits in the pre core range era, when individual cask finishes were released as standalone expressions rather than under a unified Cask Finishes umbrella. The continuity of Port wood across decades of Arran releases tracks the distillery's ongoing working relationships with Portuguese cask suppliers.
Primary maturation runs in first fill ex Bourbon American oak barrels at Lochranza, with the Port cask finishing phase in casks previously used for the maturation of Port wine in the Douro Valley. Port casks are typically larger pipe format and constructed of Portuguese or French oak. Bottled at 57.5% with no chill filtration and no added colouring.
Port cask interaction delivers the characteristic red wine signature: anthocyanins and tannins absorbed from the red grape wine, residual sugars from the fortifying spirit and the higher alcohol congeners from the long aged Port itself. The Bourbon underlay supplies the structural vanillin and lactone framework against which the Port driven berry, plum and gentle tannic drying layer expresses itself.
