Arran 25 Years Old 1996 Genuss am Gaumen (Claxton’s)

The Genuss am Gaumen label translates from German roughly as enjoyment on the palate, identifying this as a sub series targeted at the German speaking specialist whisky retail trade. The extremely small 60 bottle outturn at twenty five years suggests one of two possibilities: either a particularly active cask that lost substantial volume to evaporation over the long maturation, or a late stage cask reaching the end of its commercial viability where the remaining working volume was bottled as a final release.

Spirit was distilled at Lochranza in 1996 and matured twenty five years in a single cask before being bottled by Claxton's in 2022 at 50.1% without chill filtration and without added colour. The 60 bottle outturn represents the residual working volume of the single cask after twenty five years of evaporative concentration.

Twenty five years of cask maturation produces deep integration of cask and spirit, with the underlying Arran character from the 1996 new make fully integrated with the long oxidative cask layer. The slow oxidation across decades produces heavier aldehyde compounds, deep ester development and the integrated profile that very small remaining outturns are documenting at the end of their commercial cask life.
