The Scotch Malt Whisky Society was founded in 1983 by Pip Hills as a members only single cask whisky club, presenting individually selected casks under a distinctive numerical coding system that obscures the distillery identity behind a number. Arran carries Society distillery code 121, with the second part of the cask reference (97 in 121.97) identifying the specific cask within the Society's working inventory for that distillery. Each cask is given a descriptive name by the SMWS tasting panel, with Feels like Heaven the name applied to this 2000 vintage cask. The French oak maturation is unusual within Arran releases and reflects the Society's pursuit of distinctive cask profiles for member bottlings.

Spirit was distilled at Lochranza in 2000 and matured sixteen years in a single French oak cask. The French oak rather than the more common American oak ex Bourbon used at Arran indicates either a French oak hogshead or a wine cask format with French oak construction. Bottled at 57.4% without chill filtration and without added colour, with the 180 bottle outturn reflecting the working yield of the single cask.

French oak maturation differs from American oak in its tannic profile and lactone composition. French oak contains a higher proportion of ellagitannins from the heartwood, producing a finer grained tannic structure and a higher ratio of trans whisky lactones compared to the cis dominant American oak. The combination with the underlying Arran spirit signature from the 2000 distillation year produces a drier, more structured profile than ex Bourbon maturation would deliver at the same age.
