Description
A.D. Rattray is one of Scotland's longer running independent bottlers, founded in 1868 by Andrew Dewar Rattray and operating today under the Morrison family. The Individual Cask Release line presents single casks at natural strength under direct cask identification, drawing from the firm's deep stocks of Scotch and Irish whiskies. This Glenrothes 24 Years Old, distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2022 from cask 717972 at 54.1%, runs to 261 bottles released globally.
Twenty four years in a refill bourbon cask produces a profile fundamentally led by distillery character rather than active wood. The cask's first fill activity exhausted under previous tenancy, the wood contributes through accumulated secondary chemistry: lignin's slow breakdown delivers syringaldehyde and vanillin at attenuated levels, lactones produce coconut and creamy oak through long contact, and ellagitannins build structure gradually. The 54.1% strength reflects measured evaporation across the long maturation.
On the nose, honeyed barley sits alongside fresh apple, beeswax and a faint white peach lift. The palate moves through cooked pear, lemon curd and a clean vanilla pod note, with 54.1% strength delivering distillery character without harshness. A faint coconut and lactone lift threads through mid palate. The finish is long and softly drying, the cask's diminished tannin signature leaving the spirit's preserved Speyside fruit clearly at the front.
