Description
Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice Cask Strength tier presents the range's traditional single cask focus at undiluted strength, distinct from the standard Connoisseurs Choice releases that historically targeted a softer reduction. The Elgin firm has operated continuously since 1895, with Connoisseurs Choice itself running since 1968. This Glenrothes 16 Years Old, distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2023 from cask 17602003 at 62.7%, runs to 648 bottles released into European markets.
Sixteen years in a single Oloroso cask at sustained 62.7% delivers a tightly concentrated cask profile. The cask sat in lower humidity warehousing favouring water over alcohol evaporation, keeping the spirit at high strength. European oak's tannin contribution accumulates aggressively at this abv, while the cask's residual oxidised sherry combines with lignin's vanillin and syringaldehyde extractions. Hemicellulose breakdown produces furfural and caramelised sugar precursors, contributing to a layered cask signature beneath the high strength.
The nose carries fig, raisin and polished oak with a sherried sweetness layered over, the cask's first fill activity clearly developed. The palate concentrates further at 62.7%: dark chocolate, dried prune and a tannic European oak grip closing tight around the spirit. Cocoa nib bitterness emerges mid palate as oak tannins assert themselves. The finish runs long and resinous, the cask's full extractive load pressing through without softening.
