Description
The Roots is a respected German independent bottler founded by Stephan Maus, specialising in long aged stocks selected for character rather than commercial volume. The firm's tiny outturns reflect deliberate small batch curation rather than economic necessity. This Glenrothes was distilled in 1985, vatted from refill bourbon casks, and bottled in 2023 at 43.4% with only 33 bottles released into European markets.
Thirty seven years of refill bourbon ageing produces a profile fundamentally driven by distillery character rather than active wood contribution. The cask's first fill vanillin already extracted under previous tenancy, the second life contribution is incremental and gentle, allowing Glenrothes' natural ester chemistry to lead. The natural reduction to 43.4% reflects nearly four decades of evaporation in higher humidity warehousing, the alcohol fraction giving way to water over time. A multi cask vatting at this small outturn implies tight selection across the available stocks.
The nose carries hay barn warmth and dried grass alongside fresh apple, beeswax and a faint white peach lift. The palate runs honeyed and gentle with cooked pear, lemon curd and a clean vanilla pod note, the 43.4% strength delivering the spirit's preserved character with minimal cask interference. The finish is long, soft and lingering, the cask's exhausted tannin signature leaving the spirit's accumulated maturation clearly framed.
