Description
Hart Brothers is one of the longer running independent bottlers in Scotland, established in Glasgow in 1964 by Iain Hart and run today by the family's third generation. The Cask Strength range presents bottles drawn at natural strength from selected casks, working through the firm's broker held stocks rather than long term sherry programmes. This Glenrothes 9 Years Old was filled in 2014 and bottled in 2024 at 56.2%, vatted from refill bourbon casks for European markets.
Nine years in refill bourbon casks produces a fundamentally Speyside leaning profile. With the cask's first fill activity already softened by a prior tenant, the wood contributes incrementally rather than aggressively, allowing the spirit's distillery character to drive the profile. Glenrothes' wash and spirit stills produce a relatively fruity new make, and vatting multiple casks of similar age smooths out individual cask variation while preserving that ester driven character.
The nose lifts honeyed barley with vanilla and faint coconut, the bourbon cask's softer touch leaving the spirit's natural fruit room to express. The palate carries cooked apple, lemon curd and gentle oak spice, the 56.2% strength sitting comfortably without scorching. The finish runs medium with a clean oak close, the bourbon refill cask handing off rather than overwhelming.
