Glenrothes 10 Years Old BNSp (WhiskyHeroes)

Brave New Spirits is a Glasgow based independent bottler that pairs serious cask sourcing with deliberately playful branding. The WhiskyHeroes series casts each release as a comic book figure, with Creeper of The Casks falling into the firm's Jack-O-Barrel Halloween subset. This Glenrothes 10 Years Old draws from Amontillado sherry casks, with a Halloween appropriate 666 bottle outturn at 54.1%, released in 2025 into European markets.

Amontillado sherry occupies an unusual position in the sherry spectrum: it begins biologically aged under a flor yeast layer like Fino, then loses that layer and finishes oxidatively like Oloroso. The casks themselves arrive carrying both signatures, contributing yeasty, nutty depth alongside the dried fruit chemistry of oxidative ageing. Ten years in Amontillado wood will not produce the rancio of a much older Oloroso bottling, but it does layer in almond, salted hazelnut and a savoury complexity that sets the release apart from straight Oloroso or PX maturations.

The nose opens with toasted almond, dried apricot and a savoury saline lift that signals the cask's biologically aged origin. The palate runs through honeyed barley, dried pear and a saffron coloured nutty depth, the 54.1% strength delivering the cask's character without scorching the spirit's natural Speyside fruit. The finish is medium long and slightly briny, the Amontillado's oxidative side leaving a faint walnut whisper rather than a full rancio grip.
