Description
Brühler Whiskyhaus is a specialist whisky retailer based in Brühl near Cologne, Germany, with its own bottling line under the A Dream of Scotland banner. The Happy Halloween edition sits among the firm's seasonal themed releases, presented in 100ml format rather than the standard 700ml to position it as a tasting flight bottle for the autumn event circuit. This Glenrothes 17 Years Old, vatted from Oloroso casks and bottled in 2025 at 55.1%, runs to 82 bottles for the event market.
Seventeen years in Oloroso casks gives the spirit a long window to take on the cask's oxidised sherry character: residual glycerol and aldehydes from solera ageing transfer into the spirit while European oak's slow lignin breakdown contributes vanillin, syringaldehyde and the eugenol notes that read as clove. As a vatting of multiple casks rather than a single barrel, this release blends variation across casks to produce a more consistent profile, smoothing out individual cask outliers.
On the nose, stewed plum sits beside fig and a walnut shell note that signals genuine rancio development. The palate deepens with raisin and dark chocolate, the 55.1% strength giving the cask weight without harshness, before a cocoa nib bitterness emerges from sustained oak contact. The finish is medium long and resinous, the European oak tannin closing the door on lingering sweetness.
