Zuccardi make this organic, vegan Malbec from the high Uco Valley in Mendoza. Unoaked to keep the fruit pure, it is ripe and fresh at 13.5 percent, with plum, black cherry and a peppery, violet-edged lift.
Description
The Zuccardi family are among Argentina's leading producers, and Vida Organica is their organically and veganly farmed range, grown in the Uco Valley in Mendoza. This is single-varietal Malbec. The Uco Valley sits at high altitude in the Andean foothills, on poor, stony, alluvial soils that drain freely and keep vigour in check. The altitude is the defining factor: intense daytime sun ripens the grapes fully, while sharply cold nights preserve acidity and deepen colour and aroma, giving Malbec from here its dark fruit and floral lift. The wine is made without oak ageing, which keeps the focus on pure, primary fruit and the vineyard's freshness rather than wood. The colour is a deep purple-red. The nose shows ripe plum, black cherry and red berries with a violet note and a hint of pepper, and the palate is generous and round, fruit-driven with soft tannin and a fresh, savoury finish at a moderate 13.5 percent. Serve at 16 degrees. It is a flexible partner for grilled red meat, roast pork and empanadas.
