Description
Zorzal Nat Cool Graciano is a young natural red from Proyecto Zorzal in D.O. Navarra, made as part of Nat Cool, the easy-drinking, low-intervention project launched by Portuguese winemaker Dirk Niepoort. Graciano is usually a minor blending grape in Rioja and Navarra, prized for its colour, acidity and perfume, and here it takes the lead on its own. The fruit is grown organically, and the wine is made naturally with minimal additions, fermented and aged for around six months across barrels and cement tanks. Cement is neutral and breathes only slightly, while the brief, gentle oak softens the wine without adding flavour, keeping the bright, high-acid character of Graciano to the fore. The result, at twelve per cent alcohol, is a vivid purple-tinged red with a floral, red-fruited nose of raspberry, redcurrant and cherry lifted by black pepper and dried herbs. The palate is light, juicy and energetic, with crunchy acidity, fine tannins and a fresh, savoury finish. Natural, organic and vegan, it is made for early, easy drinking and takes a chill well. Serve at 13 to 15 degrees, with lighter meats, charcuterie and tomato-based dishes.
