Description
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, a leading Alsace estate farmed biodynamically, sources this Gewürztraminer from limestone parcels, the Roche Calcaire of the label. Limestone is the key to the wine: Gewürztraminer is naturally low in acidity, and the cool, calcareous subsoil lends the freshness and mineral backbone that keeps an aromatic grape from turning heavy. The vines are picked slightly late, so the fruit is fully ripe and the wine carries a touch of residual sugar that reads as richness rather than obvious sweetness. Gewürztraminer owes its perfume to terpenes in the skins, and a gentle whole-bunch pressing draws those aromatics into the juice before a slow, native-yeast fermentation. The colour is deep gold. The nose is openly aromatic, with rose, lychee, ginger and white peach over a honeyed note. On the palate it is broad and textured, the limestone giving a saline lift and a dry, mineral finish that offsets the ripe fruit. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a generous glass.
