Soft and tropical, this 10 Year Old Zaka from Mauritius layers vanilla, coconut and citrus over peach and a peppery lift, an easy molasses-and-cane blend at a gentle 42% that drinks more like a relaxed sipper than a powerhouse.
Description
Zaka is a Mauritian rum built from a blend of molasses and fresh sugar-cane juice, a combination the island does well, and carries ten years of age. Mauritius sits outside the French AOC framework, so this is cane-juice influenced rather than a protected agricole, an Indian Ocean style all its own.
Matured in ex-bourbon barrels at a tropical pace, it leans soft and rounded: vanilla, coconut and white chocolate up front, with bright citrus and ripe peach giving it a fruity core. At 42% it stays gentle, a touch of warmth and pepper on the tongue keeping it from feeling flat. Honey-like sweetness sits in the background without becoming cloying, making this an approachable after-dinner pour rather than a demanding one.
