Zaka

Zaka is a Panamanian molasses rum distilled on a column still at the Varela Hermanos distillery, the dominant Panama producer behind Abuelo and a major bulk source for independent labels. Aged seven years in ex-bourbon, it sits firmly in the soft, mellow Spanish style, where the cask and gentle distillate give a light, approachable character rather than power or funk.

The nose leans sweet and floral with honeycomb and citrus, while the palate brings soft wood, caramel and vanilla, closing on a finish of wood, caramel, floral notes and vanilla. There is a clear, easy sweetness in the Abuelo mould that keeps it light and friendly throughout. This is a no fuss everyday sipper, pleasant and undemanding, best understood honestly as a smooth, sweetish Panama pour for relaxed drinking rather than a rum that offers much depth beyond its years.
