Description
Zafeirakis is at the forefront of Greece's revival of native grapes, working near Tyrnavos in Central Greece, close to Thessaly, where the winery farms twelve hectares. This wine is made from Limniona, an old indigenous variety brought back from near obscurity, prized for its fresh acidity, medium body and savoury, peppery character. The continental climate here, with hot days and cool nights, ripens the fruit while holding the acidity that gives the wine its lift and freshness. Farmed biodynamically, the wine is aged twelve months in barrel followed by a further twelve months in bottle before release, the oak softening the tannins and adding gentle spice through slow oxygen exchange, and the bottle time knitting the wine together and rounding its aromatics. The colour is bright ruby, the nose showing red cherry, red berries, cracked pepper, plum and dried Mediterranean herbs. The palate is medium-bodied and savoury, with fresh acidity, fine grained tannins and an earthy, spiced finish. Serve at 16 degrees with grilled lamb, roast beef or herb-driven Mediterranean dishes.
