Description
The Zafeirakis family have grown vines in Tyrnavos in Central Greece for over a century, and under Christos Zafeirakis the estate has turned to reviving indigenous grapes. Chief among them is Limniona, a local red often likened to Pinot Noir for its elegance and freshness. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically on the region's clay and limestone soils, at altitude where hot days and cool nights give a wide temperature range that preserves acidity and aromatic detail. The wine is aged for twelve months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood softens the tannin and adds a subtle savoury frame while keeping the fruit to the fore. The colour is a bright medium red. The nose is intense and perfumed, with fresh strawberry, ripe cherry and a hint of raspberry, lifted by black pepper, dried herbs and a floral note. The palate is medium bodied and elegant, with fresh red fruit, fine tannin, lively acidity and a savoury finish. At 13 percent it is balanced and food friendly. Serve at around 16 degrees. It suits poultry, game birds and pork.
