Description
Yoyo is the small Roussillon estate of Laurence Manya-Krief, who left fashion in Paris for four hectares of vines around Montesquieu-des-Alberes, where she farms organically and works in a natural, low-intervention style. Vent Debout is a single-variety rosé from Carignan, an old Mediterranean grape that holds acidity well in a warm climate. The vineyards sit on the hard, schist and granite soils of the eastern Pyrenees foothills, where the steep sites, poor soils and persistent wind keep yields low and the fruit fresh despite the southern heat. The wine is fermented with native yeasts and aged for four months in used French oak barrels, which adds texture and a subtle savoury depth without imparting obvious oak flavour. Sulphur and cellar intervention are kept to a minimum. It pours a pale pink. The nose shows red berry, cherry and white peach with a dried-herb, savoury lift. The palate is dry and textured, the red fruit carried by firm acidity, a faint almond note from time in barrel and a saline, herbal finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
