Description
Yoichi 20 Years Old 1988 is a single malt from Nikka's Yoichi distillery in Hokkaido, distilled in 1988 and bottled in 2008, making it a natural companion to the 1987 vintage releases of the same age statement. This expression is notable for its broad cask mix: new casks, refill oak, bourbon barrels and sherry butts all contributing over a 20 year period in Hokkaido's cool, maritime conditions.
The breadth of the cask selection gives the 1988 a more complex wood profile than single-cask-type expressions, with the new oak adding resin and spice, the refill oak lending subtle structure, the bourbon barrels delivering vanilla and baked fruit, and the sherry butts introducing dried fruit depth and a darker sweetness. Yoichi's coal-fired peat smoke and coastal brine underpin the whole, bottled at cask strength 55% for the global market.
