Yllera makes this Rueda Sauvignon Blanc, part of a Valladolid family estate that has worked the denomination since 1970. Unoaked and fresh, it leads with lemon and grapefruit over pineapple and passion fruit, finishing crisp and dry.
Description
Grupo Yllera, a Valladolid family working the D.O. Rueda since 1970, makes this Sauvignon Blanc alongside its better-known Verdejo, a deliberate move beyond the region's signature grape. Rueda lies on the high central plateau of Castilla y Leon, where stony, free-draining soils and a continental climate of hot days and markedly cold nights slow ripening at the end of the season. That wide diurnal range holds acidity and concentrates the aromatic compounds that define Sauvignon Blanc, giving both citrus bite and tropical lift. The wine is made without oak to keep the fruit clean, direct and primary. The colour is pale straw with green glints. The nose is bright, led by lemon and grapefruit with nuances of pineapple and passion fruit and a light floral note. The palate is vibrant and dry, with fresh, mouth-watering acidity carrying the citrus through to a crisp, clean finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees in a white glass. It suits shellfish, grilled white fish and green salads, and its acidity makes it a natural match for fresh goat cheese.
