Yamazakura Asaka The First Peated is a cask strength single malt from Sasanokawa Shuzo's Asaka distillery in Fukushima prefecture, bottled in 2020 for global release. Running alongside the unpeated inaugural expression, The First Peated demonstrates that the Asaka team built a peated stream into the distillery's production from the outset, rather than adding peat as an afterthought.
Matured in Ex-Bourbon casks for three years, the young spirit carries both the vibrant freshness of new make and the smoke of peated barley, with the bourbon wood providing a vanilla and cereal framework around which the peat sits. At 50% it is bottled at cask strength, giving the smoke full expression without the weight that higher alcoholic strength would add. A direct, honest young peated malt from one of Fukushima's newer distilling ventures.
