Description
A Spanish Oak single malt from Yamazaki in Osaka Prefecture, the founding site of Japanese malt whisky, owned by Suntory and set in the humid Shimamoto valley where three rivers meet. The distillery prizes balance and runs many still shapes for a broad spirit palette. Bottled in 2022 with no age statement, this edition foregrounds Spanish oak above the other woods and is presented at a generous 48%.
Maturation in Spanish oak, typically ex sherry, gives a rich, savoury frame. Expect dried fruit, dark chocolate and cooked orchard fruit with an oily weight and a faint resinous edge, the fresh orchard fruit of the house sitting beneath. At 48% the whisky stays full and textural, the Spanish wood lending body and gentle spice. It closes long and warm in the rounded, balanced style for which Yamazaki has become a benchmark single malt.
