Description
A Sherry Cask single malt from Yamazaki in Osaka Prefecture, the Suntory distillery that opened Japan's malt whisky era in 1923 in the valley of Shimamoto. Set where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers meet, the distillery is prized for balance and a layered house style. Bottled in 2013 without an age statement, this edition is given over to Oloroso sherry wood and presented at a robust 48%.
Maturation in Oloroso sherry casks shapes a rich, dried fruit profile. Look for raisin, fig and dark chocolate with a savoury, nutty sherry depth, layered over the orchard fruit typical of the distillery and a touch of fresh oak. The full strength lends body and a measure of spice, carrying the whisky into a long, warming finish that stays balanced and rounded in the house style Yamazaki has long set as a benchmark.
