Description
A Sherry Cask single malt from Yamazaki in Osaka Prefecture, the founding site of Japanese malt whisky, owned by Suntory and set where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers meet near Shimamoto. Opened in 1923, the distillery prizes balance and a layered house style. Bottled in 2012 with no age statement, this is a wood focused release given entirely to Oloroso sherry casks at a full 48%.
Maturation in Oloroso sherry wood drives a rich, dried fruit character. Look for dark chocolate, raisin and fig with a savoury, nutty sherry depth, all set over the soft orchard fruit typical of the distillery and a touch of fresh oak. The higher bottling strength carries real weight and spice, and the whisky finishes long and warming, true to the balanced, rounded character that has made the house a benchmark single malt.
