Description
A no age statement Puncheon single malt from Yamazaki, founded by Suntory in 1923 in the humid Shimamoto valley of Osaka Prefecture where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers meet. Japan's first malt whisky distillery, it draws on many still shapes and cask types for a broad palette. This 2020 release sets out to show what one wood format brings to the spirit, the oversized puncheon, and arrives at a generous 48%.
Maturation in puncheons gives slow, gentle contact with the oak and a creamy, rounded weight. The whisky carries vanilla, sweet coconut and a toasted nuttiness over the soft orchard fruit typical of the distillery, with a clean, lightly spiced wood beneath. The higher strength lends body and texture, and the finish runs long and mellow, true to the balanced house character that has made Yamazaki a benchmark single malt.
