Description
A Puncheon edition single malt from Yamazaki, the Suntory distillery in Osaka Prefecture that opened Japan's malt whisky era in 1923. Set in the humid Shimamoto valley where three rivers meet, it runs a wide range of stills and woods to build its layered house style. Bottled in 2010 without an age statement, this is one of the distillery's wood focused releases, here built on the largest cask type and presented at 48%.
Matured in North American white oak puncheons, whose generous volume slows extraction and favours a creamy, rounded spirit. The palette leans to vanilla, sweet coconut and a gentle nuttiness over the orchard fruit that defines the house, with a clean oak spice underneath. The full strength carries texture and warmth, giving the whisky a long, soft close that stays balanced and true to the Yamazaki character.
