Yamazaki Islay Peated is a no age statement single malt from Suntory's distillery in the valley of Shimamoto, Osaka Prefecture, where humid air and soft river water shape the maturing spirit. Released in 2024, it borrows the heavily peated, coastal idea of Islay and applies it to the house malt, a deliberate departure from the distillery's gentler norm.
Matured in ex-bourbon casks, it carries a medicinal, peaty smoke alongside honey and dried fruit, the American oak holding the base clean so the smoke stands out sharply. The distillery's orchard fruit lingers beneath, giving the whisky a Japanese softness under its smoky surface. Bottled at cask strength 48%, it is intense and warming, a smoky single malt that wears its inspiration openly.
