Description
Yamazaki Heavily Peated is a no age statement single malt from Suntory's distillery in Shimamoto, Osaka Prefecture, set where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers meet. Bottled in 2013, it is an uncommon release from a distillery far better known for elegance than smoke, putting heavily peated spirit at the centre of the glass.
Matured in ex-bourbon casks, it lets a thick bonfire smoke ride over the distillery's orchard fruit, with dried fruit lending a sweeter counterweight. The American oak keeps the base bright so the peat reads clearly rather than muddied, and a warm vanilla note threads beneath the smoke. Bottled at cask strength 48%, it is bold and warming, a rare smoky expression of the house spirit that sits well apart from the usual elegant Yamazaki profile.
