Description
This 2009 Yamazaki was distilled by Suntory at its Osaka Prefecture distillery, the first malt site in Japan, set in the damp Shimamoto valley between Osaka and Kyoto. Bottled in 2019 at 9 Years Old for the Japanese market in a 500ml format, it is a younger single malt at full strength rather than a blended core whisky.
Maturation took place in Spanish oak, the sherry seasoned wood behind the house's darker character. At 56% it shows chocolate and dried fruit, a sherried depth and a citric edge, lifted by a fresh, new wood note. Concentrated and a touch youthful, it carries the orchard fruit and sherry balance typical of Yamazaki, drawn out with a little water at cask strength.
