Description
This is Yamazaki at 25 Years Old, the long aged peak of Suntory's Osaka Prefecture distillery, Japan's first malt site, where the humid Shimamoto valley and converging rivers favour slow maturation. Bottled in 2021 for the Netherlands, it sits at the top of the core range above the 12 and 18, a marker for aged Japanese single malt.
Maturation drew on American oak, Spanish oak and Japanese mizunara. Mizunara is the porous, hard to cooper Japanese oak that gives a signature sandalwood and incense note as the years pass, and across a quarter century it threads a leafy, temple wood depth through dried fruit, dark chocolate and the distillery's deep orchard fruit. Soft and rounded at 43%, it shows the layered, meditative character Yamazaki reaches only with long ageing.
