Description
Yamazaki 20 Years Old 1986 is a single cask single malt from Suntory's Yamazaki distillery in Osaka Prefecture, Japan's first malt distillery, founded in 1923 where three rivers meet in the valley of Shimamoto south of Kyoto. Distilled in 1986 and bottled in 2006 for the Japan market, it draws from one cask at a powerful cask strength, 63%, a long aged release from the distillery's earlier decades.
Matured in a single Oloroso sherry butt, the Spanish oak drives deep dried fruit, raisin and chocolate, with a backbone of warm oak spice built over two decades. At this strength the sherry character turns intense and concentrated over the distillery's orchard fruit, the high proof carrying the wood's dark sweetness with formidable weight. It is an undiluted, long aged showing of the sherried Yamazaki house style, rich and resinous in the glass, a single cask that rewards a careful drop of water to open its layers.
