Description
Yamazaki 18 Years Old, bottled in 2023, is a single malt from Suntory's Yamazaki distillery in Osaka Prefecture, Japan's first malt distillery, founded in 1923 in the river valley of Shimamoto between Osaka and Kyoto. This Event release is a mizunara focused 18 at cask strength, presented at 48% in a 700ml format, a Japanese oak showcase from the senior end of the range.
Matured in Japanese mizunara oak, the porous wood lends its hallmark sandalwood and incense over the distillery's deep orchard fruit. This particular pour shows a citric lift and a faint kippery, savoury edge alongside the aromatic Japanese oak, the kind of unusual note that surfaces in older Yamazaki. Cask strength holds it concentrated and full, the higher proof carrying the wood's resin with weight. It is the mizunara side of the house style in its most characterful older form, perfumed and layered.
