Description
Yamazaki is Suntory's distillery in Osaka Prefecture, the first malt distillery in Japan, founded in 1923 in the damp valley where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers meet. This 1998 vintage was drawn from a single cask at 14 Years Old and bottled in 2012 for the Japanese market, an undiluted expression rather than a component of the core whiskies.
The spirit matured in an Oloroso sherry butt, the wood that gives the house its darker, fruit laden side. At 61% it is full and warming, with raisin and dried fig, a note of espresso and warm baking spice over the distillery's orchard fruit. Concentrated at cask strength, it rewards a drop of water to draw out the layered sherry character typical of Yamazaki.
