Description
Distilled by Suntory at its Osaka Prefecture distillery, Japan's first malt site in the humid Shimamoto valley, this 1994 Yamazaki was bottled in 2006 at 12 Years Old as a single cask for the German market. It is an undiluted portrait of the house drawn from a single large format cask rather than the softer core range.
The whisky matured in an Ex-Bourbon puncheon, a big barrel that gives slow, even oak influence. At a forceful 63% it shows vanilla and toasted oak, the distillery's orchard fruit and a peppery spice, with a long, warming finish. Intense and tightly wound at full strength, it opens with a little water to reveal the clean malty character and orchard sweetness typical of Yamazaki's Ex-Bourbon puncheon bottlings.
