Yamazaki, Suntory's Osaka Prefecture distillery, was Japan's first dedicated malt site, built in 1923 in the humid valley where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers meet. This 1994 vintage, bottled in 2005 at 11 Years Old for the Japanese market, is a single cask drawn at full strength rather than a component of the rounded core whiskies.

The spirit matured in a single Oloroso sherry butt, the wood that drives Yamazaki's richer expressions. At 61% and undiluted it is concentrated and warming, with fig and dried cherry, cocoa and a sherried sweetness wrapping the distillery's underlying orchard fruit. Youthful in years but dense from the cask, it shows how active sherry wood shapes the house style early, building weight and dark fruit well before the spirit reaches the age of the core range.
