Description
Xitxarel·lo is a white made from Xarel·lo by Caves Martí Serdà, a family winery in Sant Miquel d'Olèrdola in the D.O. Penedès. The estate has a long tradition of still wines and cava, and this belongs to its more modern Casa Berger range. Xarel·lo is the backbone grape of Penedès and of cava, prized for its firm acidity, resistance to oxidation and savoury, herbal character. Penedès runs from the coast up into higher inland terraces, where limestone soils and cool nights preserve freshness in the fruit. The wine sees a short four months in French oak, enough to add a little texture and breadth without covering the grape's natural cut. That restraint keeps it fresh and primary. It pours a pale yellow with greenish highlights, clear and bright. The nose is aromatic, with green apple and pear over lemon, fennel and white flowers. The palate is crisp and dry, the brief oak lending a touch of weight to a saline, mineral finish that is true to Xarel·lo and its home. Serve it well chilled at 9 to 11 degrees.
