Attis makes this rare Atlantic red in D.O. Rías Baixas from Espadeiro, Pedral and Sousón, native Galician grapes seldom seen as reds. Twelve months in foudre gives a light, fresh wine of red berries, cracked pepper and a herbal, coastal edge.
Description
Attis Bodegas y Viñedos works in D.O. Rías Baixas in Galicia, a region known for white Albariño but with a small tradition of red wine from native grapes. Xión Cuvée Tinto is built from Espadeiro, Pedral and Sousón, three local varieties that ripen on the cool, rain-fed granite soils of Atlantic Galicia. The cool, maritime climate and short growing season keep alcohol moderate at twelve percent and preserve sharp acidity, giving a red that stays light on its feet. The wine ages twelve months in large foudres, whose low surface-to-volume ratio means gentle, slow oxygen contact and little oak flavour, so the fruit and the herbal character of the grapes come through clearly. The colour is bright, medium ruby. The nose shows red berries, fresh cherry and cracked black pepper with dried herbs and a damp, earthy note. The palate is fresh and crisp, with red currant, fine tannin and a savoury, slightly saline finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, lightly chilled. It pairs with grilled oily fish, roast chicken and pork dishes.
