Wittmann Riesling Trocken 2024

Weingut Wittmann has made wine at Westhofen in southern Rheinhessen since 1663 and is a benchmark producer of dry German Riesling. This estate bottling comes from vineyards on the limestone hills just west of the Rhine, where the vines are planted in loess over a chalky, calcareous subsoil. That limestone base is central to the wine's style: it holds water, reflects light and gives the Riesling its taut acidity and saline, stony character. Rheinhessen is one of Germany's warmer wine regions, so the fruit ripens reliably, while the estate's long-standing biodynamic farming and low yields concentrate flavour and sharpen definition. The wine is fermented to full dryness, leaving the acidity exposed and the mineral line clear rather than softened by residual sugar. Expect a pale colour, a nose of lemon, green apple and white flowers with a hint of white peach and smoke, and a dry, precise palate with real tension and a long, saline, chalky finish. Serve chilled at around 10C in a white glass. Its cut and low alcohol make it very flexible at the table with fish and lighter dishes.
