Description
Philipp Wittmann farms in the Rheinhessen and is regarded as one of Germany's finest Riesling producers, working his vineyards biodynamically. This dry, or trocken, Riesling comes from soils rich in limestone and loess, geology that gives the wine its firm mineral spine and saline finish. The region's cool continental climate and wide day-to-night temperature swing ripen the grapes slowly and lock in the high natural acidity Riesling is prized for, here at a measured twelve percent alcohol. A portion of the wine sees time in barrel, adding a little breadth and texture while the fruit stays clear and unoaked in character, and slow ageing on the lees rounds the palate. It shows a pale yellow colour with green glints. The nose is fresh and detailed, leading with lemon, green apple and white peach lifted by white floral notes. The palate is dry, precise and mineral, its citrus and orchard fruit stretched over taut acidity, closing long on a stony, saline finish. This is a Riesling of tension and clarity rather than sweetness. Serve well chilled at around 9 to 10 degrees.
