A cask strength white agricole from Madeira’s William Hinton, distilled from fresh cane juice and rested in Madeira casks at 59%, floral and fruity with overripe cane, strawberry and a honeyed, faintly funky finish.
Description
Madeira is one of the few places outside the French islands legally allowed to use the term rhum agricole, and William Hinton works there from fresh pressed sugar cane juice. This Comemoracao 600 Anos is a single cask white bottled at a vivid 59%, with a turn in Madeira casks that nudges it beyond a plain blanc while keeping it unsweetened.
Distilled on a column still in the agricole style, it keeps the freshness and snap of cane juice but pushes into riper, funkier territory. The nose is overripe and fermented with strawberry and fresh cane, and the palate turns sweet toned and buttery with honey and more cane, the Madeira influence adding a vinous lift to a floral, fruity finish. The estery, almost Jamaican white character makes it a striking cocktail rum, at its best in a Daiquiri, in poncha or in any citrus forward serve.
