Weingut Seckinger is run by brothers Jonas, Lukas and Philip in Germany’s Palatinate. This dry Riesling comes off loess soils around Ruppertsberg, is fermented in stainless steel and keeps a taut, citrus-driven line of lemon, green apple and wet stone.
Description
Weingut Seckinger is a young, biodynamic estate in the Palatinate, the warm wine region in Germany's southwest, run by brothers Jonas, Lukas and Philip since they took over the family vineyards in 2012. This Riesling is sourced from loess soils in sites around Ruppertsberg, including Linsenbusch. Loess is a deep, wind-blown silt that warms readily and drains well, giving ripe but precise fruit, while the region's sunshine is balanced by cool nights that preserve the grape's natural acidity. Fermentation is in stainless steel with no oak, a choice that keeps the wine transparent and lets the fruit and mineral character show without any wood influence. It is bottled dry, or trocken. The wine is pale with a green cast. The nose leads with lemon, green apple and white peach, lifted by citrus peel and white flowers over a wet-stone note. The palate is lean and dry, with bright acidity and a saline, faintly bitter-citrus finish that keeps it fresh. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It suits raw and grilled shellfish, and its acidity and low weight make it a good foil for mild curries and spiced Asian dishes.
