Description
Weingut Seckinger is run by the brothers Jonas, Lukas and Philip in Ruppertsberg, a small village in the Palatinate in southern Germany. The family once sold its grapes to larger German wineries and only began making its own wine in 2012, drawing on a set of old vineyards. This Chardonnay comes from those older vines, which carry lower yields and more concentrated fruit, and it is farmed biodynamically and made as a natural wine with minimal additions. It is fermented in barrel, so the fermentation and the oak work together from the start, giving a more integrated, savoury oak character than a wine oaked after the fact. Barrel fermentation and time on the lees build texture and a subtle nutty, bready complexity, while the cool northern climate keeps the acidity firm and the fruit restrained. The 2024 pours pale gold. The nose leads with pear and green apple over hazelnut, beeswax and toasted bread. The palate is textured and dry, with orchard fruit, a fine lees creaminess and a savoury, mineral finish framed by gentle oak. Serve at 11 to 13 degrees in a white wine glass.

Additional information
Serve it with roast chicken, grilled pork or baked white fish, where the barrel texture and savoury character sit comfortably. It also matches nutty hard cheeses such as gruyère and aged gouda.
