Weingut Robert Weil makes this dry Riesling from vineyards around Kiedrich in the Rheingau, on slate and quartzite soils above the Rhine. Fermented and rested on its lees, it shows lemon, white peach and green apple with a firm mineral line.
Description
Weingut Robert Weil is one of the leading estates of the VDP Rheingau, run by Wilhelm Weil from the family cellars founded by his great-grandfather Robert Weil in the nineteenth century. This dry Riesling comes from vineyards around the village of Kiedrich, on the north bank of the Rhine, where slate and quartzite soils drain quickly and force the vines to root deep. The Rheingau sits far enough north that the growing season is long and cool, and the river moderates temperature while reflecting light back onto the slopes, so the grapes ripen slowly and hold their acidity. The wine is fermented dry and rested on its fine lees, which softens the sharper edges and adds a subtle breadth of texture without masking the fruit. It is pale straw in colour, with a nose of lemon, white peach and green apple lifted by white flowers and a trace of honey. The palate is taut and mineral, the fruit set against a firm line of acidity that runs through to a clean, stony finish. Serve well chilled, around 10 degrees, as an aperitif or with grilled white fish and fresh shellfish.
