Description
Weingut Prager is a leading Wachau estate, and Hinter der Burg is made from Gruner Veltliner, Austria's flagship white grape and the region's most planted variety after Riesling. The wine is grown on a hill by the castle at Weissenkirchen, in a region defined by steep terraced vineyards on rocky primary-rock and loess soils above the Danube. The setting drives the style: cool nights, warm days and a wide diurnal range preserve sharp acidity and give the wine its precision and length, while the stony soils lend a firm mineral cut. It is made in a dry, unoaked style, aged in stainless steel to protect its primary fruit and the peppery aromatics that mark the variety. The colour is pale straw with green tints. The nose shows green apple, lemon and white peach with the grape's signature white-pepper spice over white flowers, and the palate is dry and precise, driven by crisp acidity and a stony minerality into a clean finish. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees.
