Description
Weingut Eymann works in the Palatinate, farming biodynamically around the village of Gönnheim in the warm, sheltered belt west of the Rhine. Gönnheimer Alter Satz revives an old German practice: several grape varieties planted together in one vineyard, harvested at the same time and fermented as a single batch. Here Gewürztraminer, Moscatel and Riesling grow side by side on the region's sandy, limestone-influenced soils, and the mixed planting balances ripeness with acidity across a picking date that suits all three. The must is fermented in barrel, where slow fermentation and lees contact add texture and a gentle savoury frame without covering the fruit. The colour is golden yellow. Gewürztraminer and Moscatel drive the aromatics, with rose, white peach and ginger spice, while Riesling adds lemon and a mineral cut that keeps the wine fresh. The palate is dry to just off-dry, medium-bodied and lightly spiced, with honey and nutmeg over a firm line of acidity. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
