A fifteen year old German rum from WeiLa rested in ex-bourbon oak, soft and woody at 40% with vanilla and raisin on the nose, a touch of citrus lift and a sweet, oak-led palate that wears its age gently.
Description
WeiLa HSV 040 Hamburg Rum is a distillery bottling carrying fifteen years behind it, made and released by WeiLa in Germany. As a European-matured rum it has aged slowly in the cooler northern climate, where oak works in more gently than it would in the tropics, so the years show as depth and polish rather than heavy extraction. This is the house presenting its own long-aged stock at an easy, sociable strength.
Maturation in ex-bourbon casks, the usual choice for aged molasses rum, sets the tone. The nose opens on vanilla and raisin with a thread of citrus, while the palate turns woody and sweet, the oak rounded rather than drying. At 40% it sits soft and unhurried, a sipping rum that leans on time in wood and a familiar bourbon-cask sweetness rather than high proof or bold funk, suited to a quiet after-dinner pour.
