Waterkloof grows this Chenin Blanc on old vines above False Bay, in the cooler coastal corner of Stellenbosch. The winery farms biodynamically, and the wine shows white peach, pear and quince with a lemony line of acidity and a broad, textured palate.
Description
Waterkloof is a biodynamic estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa's largest and most important wine region, with these Chenin Blanc vines planted on cooler slopes overlooking False Bay. The maritime influence off the South Atlantic is central here: constant sea breezes and cool nights slow ripening and hold on to acidity, which is what gives the wine its structure and length. The vines are old, with deep roots that draw a consistent, concentrated fruit through the dry summers, and the estate works the sites with minimal intervention. Fermentation retains the fruit and builds a broad, slightly waxy texture typical of Chenin from good sites, while time on the fine lees adds weight to the mid palate without masking the grape. The colour is pale gold. The nose leads with white peach, pear and quince, backed by honey and a light beeswax note. The palate is dry and textured, the stone fruit carried by a firm lemony acidity through to a saline, savoury finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits roast pork, grilled white fish and hard nutty cheeses.
