Saburomaru 2020 is a vintage-dated single malt from Wakatsuru Shuzo's Saburomaru distillery in Toyama prefecture, bottled after 3 years of maturation as part of the distillery's continuing annual series. This expression was bottled in 2023 at a notably high cask strength of 60%, placing it among the more powerful releases in the vintage programme.
Matured in Ex-Bourbon casks, the wood lends a vanilla and caramel structure that holds beneath the distillery's heavily peated spirit. At 60% abv there is considerable intensity, and Saburomaru's signature peat character, drawn from its ZEMON cast metal still and old-school production philosophy, comes through undiluted. With no specific flavour profile recorded for this particular batch, the expression is best understood in terms of the Toyama distillery's typical house style: smoke-forward, full and direct.
