Saburomaru 2020 appears in multiple batch releases, and this 48% expression shares a 2020 distillation year with the higher-strength version, bottled in 2023 from Wakatsuru's Saburomaru distillery in Toyama prefecture. The annual vintage single malt series allows comparison across batches and bottling strengths from the same production season.
Ex-Bourbon cask maturation over 3 years gives a foundation of vanilla and toasted oak. The recorded flavour notes for this batch show a coastal and smoky direction, with citric brightness, kippery peat smoke, leafy and tobacco character, and a persistent old-wood dryness. That character is consistent with Saburomaru's peated house style and its uniquely configured ZEMON pot still. Bottled at cask strength 48%, it is a direct and unvarnished expression of what Toyama's most distinctive distillery produces at three years of age.
