Description
Saburomaru 2018 is an annual vintage single malt from Wakatsuru's Saburomaru distillery in Toyama prefecture, bottled after 3 years of maturation as one of the distillery's yearly releases charting the character of each distillation season. Saburomaru is defined by its heavily peated house style and by its ZEMON cast metal pot still, a combination that gives a distinctive new-make character unlike any other Japanese distillery.
Matured in Ex-Bourbon casks, the 2018 vintage shows dried and fresh fruit alongside soft vegetative peat smoke and the solvent lift typical of a young, high-strength single malt. Old wood notes appear early for a 3 Years Old expression, a function of the distillery's concentrated, heavily peated spirit. Bottled at cask strength 48%, this is an honest and direct document of Saburomaru's character at the youngest end of its release programme.
